The Brilliant Airbnb Job Application Stunt (That Actually Worked)

Nina Mufleh was facing the problem all-too-common in today’s world: she applied for job after job at her dream employer, Airbnb, but none of her attempts were successful.

Rather than just give up, Mufleh decided to get creative. This month, she created a stunning online resume in the same format as Airbnb’s website.

Here are some highlights:

Next step: social media

Once her creation was finished, Mufleh Tweeted at Airbnb, along with company CEO Brian Chesky and CMO Jonathan Mildenhall. To put it mildly, they were impressed:

@ninamufleh I am reviewing right now. Very impressive :) — Brian Chesky (@bchesky) April 21, 2015

Wow this is the best social application I have ever seen. It helps - a little - that @QueenNoor endorses. #callnina https://t.co/kQWkS4CVxJ

Ok. You floored me with this brilliance. We'll set something up for us to meet. I love your smarts. Very much. https://t.co/EaIwOHSywo — Jonathan Mildenhall (@Mildenhall) April 21, 2015

The result

nina-airbnbThe best part of all of this? Unlike some other application stunts, it actually worked. Mufleh has a formal interview with an Airbnb marketing recruiter this week.

From a recruiter’s perspective, the best part of Mufleh’s application was it showed not only how much she loved Airbnb, but also how she could help the company succeed. In a world where you can post a job and get hundreds of generic applications, seeing something tailored directly for your company really stands out.
